On the insulating glass line, the sealant cure profile isn’t a “nice-to-have.” It’s the difference between an edge that stays flat and glass that survives the next handling step. Convection ovens have a hard time keeping up with the emissivity of black silicone beads, so you end up with hot spots and cold corners. That shows up later as micro-cracks, edge warp, and optical distortion—the kind that come back as field failures. Here’s what we do technically. We run short-wave infrared quartz emitters tuned to the silicone sealant absorption band. The energy goes straight into the bead, not into heating air. The emitter array follows the spacer contour, and the zone control keeps temperature spread tight across the glass width. The response is quick—full thermal recovery after each pass—so cure time stays consistent even when line speed changes. We match output density to the sealant cross-section, so the surface cures without trapping volatiles. Why does this work on real glass? Uniform heat distribution is the only practical way to avoid thermal stress fractures and shape deviation, especially on coated or tempered lites. With infrared, the bead hits cure temperature fast while the glass stays closer to a stable profile. That cuts edge tension and limits bow. You get repeatable adhesion, fewer rejects from visual defects, and a cure window that holds steady when ambient temperature swings. Energy use drops because the heat goes where it’s needed, not into the plant air. A couple of things to keep in mind. Infrared curing is line-of-sight and distance-sensitive. Emitter-to-glass spacing needs to be fixed and repeatable, and the path has to stay clear of dust and mist that scatter energy. If your line runs multiple spacer widths, you’ll need to retune the zone settings for each profile. Expect a short commissioning period to lock down the cure schedule. Once it’s set, the process drifts less than convection and gives you fewer temperature-induced quality excursions.
