Trying to heat a drafty changing area with a standard HVAC system is a losing battle. You’ve got high ceilings and doors swinging open every two minutes, letting all that expensive warm air escape. It’s a waste of money. Instead, we go with ceiling-mounted infrared heaters. Why? Because we stop trying to heat the room and start heating the people. The secret to instant warmth Most heaters just warm up the air. But radiant heat is different. It sends out waves that travel through the air without bothering it at all. The heat only kicks in when it hits something solid—like a person or a wooden bench. That’s why you feel the warmth the second you step under one. It cuts right through that “cold sink” feeling you get in big industrial spaces, keeping the chill from settling around your ankles. Picking the right gear We usually stick with short-wave or medium-wave elements. Short-wave is the way to go if people are only hanging out for a few minutes. It’s fast. Really fast. We tuck these into rugged housings up on the ceiling. It keeps them out of the way and ensures nobody accidentally touches a hot element. One thing to watch out for: the height. If the ceiling is high, you need more power to make sure the warmth actually reaches the floor. But be careful. If you go overboard with the wattage, you’ll end up with “hot spots” that feel like standing under a heat lamp at a buffet. The trade-off Here is the honest truth: these systems aren’t perfect. You’ll need a steady power supply so the elements don’t flicker or burn out early. And you have to accept that the room won’t be one uniform temperature. The area under the heater will feel great, but the far corners might still be a bit nippy. It’s a fair trade, though. You get immediate warmth and a much lower energy bill because you aren’t paying to heat a giant volume of empty air.
