
Keeping Things Safe When Heat Meets Water: The Deal with IP65 Infrared
Putting a heater in a shower or a steam room sounds simple until you remember that water and electricity are a nightmare pairing. You’ve got two big problems to solve: keeping the moisture out of the wiring and making sure the heater doesn’t literally explode when a cold drop of water hits it. Standard heaters just can’t handle this. That’s why we lean on IP65-rated housings and quartz tubes that can take a beating.
Why the Glass Actually Matters
You’ll see “IP65” on the box, which basically means the outer shell is tight enough to keep out dust and water jets. But the shell is only half the story. Think about this: a standard glass tube gets screaming hot—maybe 600°C. If a single cold droplet hits that surface, the glass shocks and cracks. It’s a mess. We use high-purity quartz because it doesn’t freak out during those temperature swings. And if the tube does happen to break? That IP65 seal is your safety net. It stops the water from hitting the live terminals, which keeps you from dealing with a dangerous short circuit.
How it Actually Heats You
These lamps use shortwave infrared. Instead of trying to warm up the humid air in the room (which is a losing battle in a damp bathroom), they beam heat directly onto your skin. It feels more like standing in the sun. One thing to watch out for is the seals at the end caps. Some cheap versions use flimsy seals that let moisture creep into the filament. If that happens, your tungsten burns out in a few weeks. We use heavy-duty seals because they actually last for thousands of hours.
A Couple of Things to Keep in Mind
These lamps are powerful. They kick in instantly, but they pull a lot of juice. You’ll want to double-check that your circuit breaker can handle the peak amperage so you aren’t tripping the power every time you want to get warm. Also, remember that those quartz tubes gethot. Like, really hot. You need a physical guard between the lamp and your skin. Even if the electrical side of things is perfectly safe, a direct touch will give you a nasty burn. Just a little bit of distance makes all the difference.
