
Dealing with Extra-Thick Glass? Try Pre-heating.
If you’ve ever tried to score a piece of ultra-thick glass, you know the struggle. It’s a fight. The material just pushes back, which beats up your cutting wheels and usually leaves you with jagged, ugly breaks. It’s frustrating and expensive. We found a better way: infrared (IR) lamps. Instead of forcing a cold blade through stubborn glass, we soften the path first. The secret is in the wavelength. Most heat lamps just warm up the surface, which doesn’t do much for a thick slab. We use shortwave IR because it actually sinks deep into the glass. Think of it as relaxing the material. We aren’t melting anything—that would be a disaster—but we are lowering the internal tension. It makes the glass feel more “yielding” when the wheel finally hits it. Getting the gear right. We usually go with high-wattage quartz envelopes. They can handle the intense heat needed to get the glass soft quickly. The setup is key. We put the lamps in a tight focal array so the heat hits exactly where the cut is happening. You don’t want to waste energy heating up the whole table. One tip: watch your distance. If the lamp is too close, you might shock the glass. Too far, and the heat won’t reach the bottom layers. It takes a little tweaking to find that sweet spot. What this actually does for your shop. The biggest difference? The wheel just glides. That annoying “chatter” you hear when scoring thick glass? Gone. And because there’s way less friction, your wheels last much longer. You aren’t swapping them out nearly as often. Just a heads-up: these lamps put off a ton of heat. If you’re tucking them into a tight cabinet, don’t skimp on the cooling fans. If you don’t get some decent airflow in there, you’ll end up frying your controllers or melting your sockets. Not a fun way to spend a Tuesday.
