
Stop the Bathroom Fog (and the Mold) Using Infrared
Most people think those heating lamps in the bathroom are just for keeping your shoulders warm while you get ready. But if you look at it from a build perspective, they’re actually doing something way more useful: they’re fighting the dew point. By putting specific infrared (IR) emitters into your ceiling or behind the mirror, you can actually stop mold before it even has a chance to start.
How it actually works
Here’s the thing about shortwave infrared: it doesn’t bother warming up the air in the room. Instead, it goes straight for the surface of your walls and mirrors. It bumps the temperature of the glass and tile just enough so that moisture can’t settle. If the surface stays dry, the water in the air has nowhere to land. You aren’t just making the room cozy; you’re basically stripping away the dampness that mold loves.
The nitty-gritty on the gear
We use high-purity quartz glass for these lamps. Why? Because quartz can handle being turned on and off rapidly without cracking under the pressure. We also tune the wavelength to specifically target water molecules. This creates a little “dry zone” right around your mirror. One heads-up: these units pull a lot of power to get that surface temperature up quickly. That means they gethot. If you cram these into a tight spot without any airflow, you might melt the plastic housing. Just make sure whatever materials you’re using are rated for the heat of a quartz tube.
Why bother?
First off, no more wiping down a fogged-up mirror after a shower. It just stays clear. Plus, it takes a lot of the pressure off your exhaust fan. You don’t have to run the vent for an hour after every shower just to keep the walls from sweating. If you want to be smart about it, hook them up to a timer or a humidity sensor. That way, they only run when they’re actually needed, and you aren’t wasting electricity. It’s a simple, “set it and forget it” way to keep a bathroom healthy.
