
Why we actually put our bathroom lamps through “damp-heat” torture tests
Let’s be honest: bathrooms are a nightmare for electronics. You’ve got thick steam, random splashes of water, and temperatures that swing from freezing to boiling in minutes. If the seal on an infrared lamp isn’t perfect, it’s going to die. Fast. That’s why we don’t just hope for the best. We put every batch of our heaters through damp-heat aging tests. Basically, we try to break them in the lab so they don’t break in your customer’s house. The problem with moisture Most of these heaters use quartz glass tubes with halogen filaments. The real enemy here isn’t a big splash of water—it’s the slow creep. If there’s even a microscopic gap between the glass tube and the metal cap, moisture finds a way in. It crawls inside. Then, the second that filament hits white-hot temperatures, the tube cracks. It’s a disaster. To stop this, we shove our lamps into high-humidity chambers and cycle them over and over. We’re simulating years of shower steam in a fraction of the time. If a seal is going to leak, we want it to happen on our watch, not after a customer has already installed it. Dealing with the shock Then there’s the thermal stress. Think about it: steam settles on the glass, creating a layer of condensation. The moment the lamp kicks on, that water flashes into steam instantly. It’s a violent reaction. If the glass isn’t tempered just right, or if the heat isn’t spread evenly, the whole thing can shatter. We keep a close eye on the glass during these cycles to make sure it can handle the expansion without snapping. The balancing act Now, you might think, “Just seal the thing airtight and call it a day.” But here’s the catch. If we over-engineer the seals, we trap the heat at the base. That’s how you end up with melted plastic housings or fried internal wiring. It’s a bit of a tightrope walk. We have to make the seal tight enough to keep the steam out, but breathable enough so the electronics don’t cook themselves. We don’t guess when it comes to how long these will last. We just keep testing until things fail, then we fix it and do it all over again.
