
Getting the Heat Right for Long Glass Tube Tunnel Kilns
If you’re sealing glass tubes in a tunnel kiln, you know the struggle. You need the heat to be exactly the same from start to finish. But once your tunnel hits that 2-meter mark, standard lamps just don’t do the job. They aren’t built for that kind of scale. That’s where we come in. The Struggle with 2+ Meter Spans
Here’s the thing: when you build a heating element over two meters long, physics starts fighting you. You run into voltage drops and thermal expansion that can ruin a batch. We don’t just “stretch” a filament and hope for the best. We meticulously balance the wattage and voltage so the heat density stays dead-on from the first centimeter to the very last. Why does this matter? Because if you just cram too much power into one long tube, you get hotspots. And hotspots lead to cracked glass. Nobody wants that.
No Cold Spots, No Stress
To keep things smooth, we use a continuous layout. This gets rid of those annoying “cold spots” you often find between separate lamps. We use high-purity quartz glass because it can take the beating of constant heating and cooling cycles without giving up. Depending on what kind of glass you’re working with, we can tweak the wavelength. Shortwave if you need it to hit hard and fast, or medium-wave if you need a slower, more controlled soak. We also use reinforced end-caps. These keep the lamps from shifting around while the kiln expands. You can use your usual industrial connectors, but a quick tip: check your power supply’s phase balance. It’ll stop the flickering and keep the heat steady.
A Word of Caution
These long lamps put out an incredible amount of energy, but they’re fragile. Think about it—a 2-meter quartz tube is way more sensitive to a bump or a shake than a tiny 300mm lamp. It’s delicate. When you’re installing these, make sure your mounting brackets have some breathing room. Quartz grows as it heats up. If your brackets are clamped too tight, the lamps will simply snap. Give them space to move, and they’ll treat you right.
