
Getting Long-Format Glass Kilns Right
If you’re trying to heat an ultra-long glass tunnel, you quickly realize that just throwing more lamps at the problem doesn’t work. Once you cross that 2-meter mark, things get tricky. You start fighting cold spots or, even worse, you end up burning out your elements because the heat isn’t balanced.
Power and the Long Game
We handle this by building a continuous array of high-output infrared lamps. For glass, we stick with shortwave IR. It’s the best tool for the job because it punches right through the surface to heat the core of the glass quickly. But here’s the thing: you can’t just daisy-chain these things together and hope for the best. If you do, the first lamp in the line takes a beating while the last one barely does anything. We balance the load across several controllers instead. We also tweak the wattage and voltage to fit your specific power grid. Going with high-voltage setups keeps the current draw low, which means we can use thinner wiring and keep the cables from overheating.
Dealing with Thermal Stress
When you’re working with custom lengths, the risk of a quartz tube snapping goes up. Why? Because quartz expands when it gets hot. If you pin it too tightly into a 2-meter frame, it has nowhere to go.Snap. To stop that from happening, we use reinforced mounting brackets that give the material room to breathe. We also use focused reflectors to push the heat exactly where it needs to go—onto the glass. It stops you from wasting energy. Depending on what’s in your glass, you can go with an open-tube design or a shielded one if you’re worried about contaminants gunking up the quartz.
The Heat Trade-off
A 2-meter array puts out a massive amount of heat. It’s great for getting more glass through the line, but it’s a lot for your ventilation to handle. If your cooling system isn’t up to the task, the air around the lamps gets way too hot. That’s how you kill your electrodes early. My advice? Use high-temp leads and make sure your airflow is dialed in perfectly. It saves you a lot of headaches down the road.
