
Getting Silk-Screening and Tempering Right (Without Burning Your Ink)
Here’s the struggle when you’re trying to silk-screen and temper glass in one go: you’re fighting a war between the ink and the glass. You need enough heat to get that glass strong and stress-free, but if you push it too hard, you’ll toast your artwork. It’s a tight window. To hit that sweet spot, we use short wave quartz infrared lamps. Why short wave? Think of it this way. Medium wave heat kind of hangs around the surface. But short wave? It cuts right through. It hits the glass substrate fast and hard, driving the temperature up to the tempering point before the ink on the surface has a chance to burn. The result is a pane that’s rock solid, but the image stays crisp. No blurring, no scorching. Just a clean look. Picking your gear We use high-purity quartz tubes because they can handle the thermal shock without cracking. But you can’t just plug any lamp in and hope for the best. You have to match your wattage and voltage to how fast your conveyor is moving. If you’re running thick glass, you need that high-wattage punch. Just be careful. If you crank the power but keep the belt moving slowly, you’re going to fry your ink. It’s all about that balance between heat density and speed. The nitty-gritty of installation We keep the connectors standard. Why? Because nobody wants their entire line dead for half a day just because one tube popped. You want to be able to swap them out and get moving again in minutes. One thing to watch out for: these lamps put out an incredible amount of heat in a very small space. If your ventilation is lazy, the oven housing is going to soak up all that heat. Eventually, that kills the lamps and can even warp your brackets. And for heaven’s sake, use high-temp leads. You don’t want to find out the hard way that your insulation has melted into a puddle.
