
Why we put our bathroom heaters through “the torture chamber”
Bathrooms are honestly a nightmare for electronics. You’ve got thick steam, random splashes of water, and temperatures that jump from freezing to sauna-hot in about five minutes. Now, you’ll see an “IPX4 rating” on the box. That basically means the outer shell can handle a few splashes. But here’s the thing: that rating doesn’t tell you if the guts of the heater will rust away after two years of use.
The hidden problem with steam
Water vapor is sneaky. It doesn’t just stay on the outside; it finds its way through the seals. Once it’s inside, it settles on the wiring and the quartz tube contacts. Over time, this creates “creepage.” That’s just a fancy way of saying the electricity starts jumping where it shouldn’t because of the gunk and corrosion. And that’s how you get a short circuit. To stop that from happening, we use damp heat aging. We basically lock the heaters in a chamber with 95% humidity and crank up the heat. We flip the power on and off, over and over. It’s a brutal process. But it forces any weak solder or cheap gaskets to fail right here on our floor, rather than in your bathroom.
The heat struggle
Shortwave infrared lamps get incredibly hot. That’s great for drying you off, but it’s tough on the hardware. The heat makes the seals expand and contract. If the material isn’t just right, it’ll crack. And once a seal cracks, that IPX4 protection is pretty much useless. We also keep a close eye on the connection points. If the metal isn’t plated perfectly, the humidity will eat it alive. That increases resistance, the wires overheat, and suddenly you’ve got a dead heater.
Why we bother
If you skip these tests, you’re basically gambling. A heater might work perfectly for a month, and then the first big winter humidity spike hits and—pop—it’s gone. We do the hard work now so you don’t have to deal with a broken product or a messy repair later. Just keep in mind: the IPX4 rating handles the splashes, but the aging test is what actually beats the steam.
