
Getting Low-E Glass Preheating Right (Especially When It’s Wide)
When you’re dealing with wide-format Low-E glass, the biggest headache is usually the temperature. You need the heat to be perfectly flat across the whole sheet. But here’s the problem: once you go past 3 meters, the standard lamps you buy off the shelf just don’t cut it. You end up with cold spots or weird thermal gradients that mess up the coating. That’s why we don’t do “standard.” We build continuous, ultra-long infrared units that actually fit the footprint of your specific oven.
The Struggle with 3m+ Arrays
You can’t just string a bunch of small bulbs together and hope for the best. We use high-wattage quartz tubes built for the long haul. The trick is balancing the voltage and wattage. If you aren’t careful, those tubes can actually bow under their own thermal expansion. It’s a messy way to fail. And if you try to cram too much heat density into one long run? You’ll get hotspots. To stop that, we obsess over the wire load per centimeter. You also have to make sure your power supply can handle the total amperage across that 3-meter span. Otherwise, your edges stay cold, and you’ve wasted your time.
The Nitty-Gritty: Materials and Stability
We house the tungsten filaments in high-purity quartz glass. It’s the only way to handle the constant heating and cooling that happens in glass molding and coating lines. Depending on your process, we can even add specific coatings to the tubes. This shifts the emission spectrum so the glass absorbs the heat better. Then there’s the wiring. This is where most systems fall apart. We use heavy-duty connectors because, frankly, cheap ones will just burn out under constant thermal stress.
A Few Things to Keep in Mind
These long-run units move a massive amount of product, but they aren’t exactly “plug and play.” A 3-meter heater is heavy. If your support frames aren’t beefy enough, they’ll sag. And if the tube warps even a little, your heat focal point shifts, and you’re back to square one. Plus, you’re dealing with a huge amount of radiant energy. Make sure your oven’s cooling jackets are sized right, or the outer shell will get way too hot to touch.
