If you’ve ever spent hours on a piece of glass only to have it shatter the moment you start bending it, you know the frustration. It’s usually thermal shock. Glass is picky. You have a tiny window of temperature where it’s actually pliable. If one part of the glass gets scorching hot while the rest is still cold, the tension just rips the piece apart. To stop that, we rely on shortwave infrared lamps and some high-quality reflectors.
Getting the Heat Right
The secret is how fast you can jump from “off” to “hot.” Shortwave IR lamps are great because they react almost instantly. When you pair them with a fast-switching SCR or a high-frequency transformer, you can tweak the heat on the fly. It stops that “cold-hit” shock that happens when you first start heating, making the whole process feel a lot smoother. And don’t forget the reflectors. We use polished aluminum or gold-coated backing to bounce that heat right back onto the glass. Without them, you’re basically wasting half your energy heating up the machine frame. A good reflector lets you hit that softening point faster without having to crank the wattage to dangerous levels.
The Balancing Act
Here’s the catch: high-intensity lamps generate a massive amount of heat. It’s tempting to just blast the power to speed up your cycle times, but that’s a recipe for disaster. You’ll fry your cooling fans and melt your housing. You have to find the sweet spot between the lamp’s output and the focal length of the reflector. If the lamp sits too close to the backing, you’ll overheat the quartz envelope and burn out your bulbs way too soon.
Real-World Tips for the Shop
When you’re actually wiring this thing up, check your connectors. If your contacts are loose or cheap, you’ll get voltage drops. That leads to uneven heating, which means your bend radius will be all over the place. Nothing kills a production run faster than inconsistent curves. One last thing:keep your reflectors clean. A little bit of dust or a few fingerprints of oil might not seem like much, but they kill your efficiency and create hot spots on the glass. A quick wipe-down saves you from a lot of wasted material.
